Six Months of Vocabulary Practice [words on wednesdays]

Six months ago, we started Words On Wednesdays as a way to improve our vocabulary and practice our writing at the same time. Since then, hundreds of writers have participated.

Now, it’s time for a review. The aim was to help you improve your vocabulary, so here’s a quiz to see what you retained.

More than 1/2 right. I’m glad, but I need to cozy up to the dictionary. I am impressed with the effect that reading in context has on finding the right word.

  • Steve Stretton

12 out of 13. I left out the “e” in refusenik, (I presume that was the intended word).
Really like AJ’s poem, very clever.

  • Katherin Smith

11 out of 13…not too bad.

  • A.J. Wagoner

I wrote a poem from this(supposed to be centered):

    Words on Wednesdays Mania

    The Words on Wednesdays Mania
    Takes Storm
    Mendacious Plonk
    Of Peevish Trilobites
    Aberration Lunacy
    Antediluvian Compunction
    For Every Faithful Craze
    Contract Conjunctions Indicates Plague
    Indubitable Rapaciousness
    Brackish Ruin Vociferous Siren
    Shingles Distinguishes Tessellation
    Toxic Satellite
    Quintessence Malaise
    Refusenik’s Blight
    Upon Shingle Beach
    A Pebble’s Primitive Outcry

    Oh Words on Wednesdays Mania

Please Miss, I didn’t do very good on the test eh! But my favourite word is “tessellation” I just love the taste of it in my mouth. I so look forward to Wednesday words (which arrive here on Thursday!).

Aaarrgghhhh! One stupid mistake! I KNEW Venus wasn’t a satellite – what was I thinking?
Great fun though; thanks Write Practice, love a vocab test :-) 12 out of 13.

      Well done, Aisha!

I like “malaise”. It’s fun to say and conjures up a hazy descriptive image. There’s a perfect word out there for anything you need. We just need to find it!

    • http://joebunting.com Joe Bunting

Yes, it is melifluos, isn’t it? ;) I always think of marmalade when I hear it.

My favorite was definitely “siren”! So many great takes on the word and how it plays out in our imagination(s). Words on Wednesdays have been spectacular. This feature provides us with a weekly challenge that I’ve shared with several friends in the education community.

    Keep up the great work!

      Thanks Justin!
