End the Year With a Story
It’s been a wild ride to the end of 2016. As writers, I want us to finish this year out strong.
What better way to wrap up the year than with a writing contest?
But we’re not ending 2016 with just any contest. The Winter Writing Contest will be . . .
Our Biggest Contest Yet
This contest, we’re going big and pulling out all the stops. Trust me, this is a contest you’ll not want to miss.
If you’ve spent time with us here at The Write Practice, you know we value deliberate practice, meaningful feedback, and helping writers get published.
And guess what? This contest includes all of that.
Let me explain what makes the Winter Writing Contest special.
You Will Grow as a Writer
Writing contests can be some of the best practice you can get for your writing. They offer motivation (prizes!), deadlines, inspiration (contest themes!), and publication opportunities.
But they can also be very discouraging. I know from personal experience how frustrating it can be to lose a writing contest, especially when you have no idea why your story wasn’t chosen.
More than anything, I want our contests to be helpful to you as writers. That discouragement isn’t helpful.
What is helpful? Meaningful feedback that shows you what’s working in your stories, what’s not, and what you can do to make your writing even better.
Through this contest, you’ll get meaningful feedback in three ways:
- You’ll get premium instruction to help you write the best story you’re capable of.
- You’ll get personalized feedback on your story from the writers in Becoming Writer, our vibrant writing community.
- You can choose to get personalized feedback directly from the judges explaining why your story was or wasn’t chosen as a winner.
If you enter this contest, I can’t promise you’ll win. But I can promise you’ll become a better writer.
You Will Get Published
I know it’s frustrating when you work hard on a piece you know is great, but it doesn’t get selected by the judges. You want your writing to get the exposure it deserves.
So do we.
That’s why this writing contest is unique in one more way: everyone who enters gets published.
We’re partnering with Short Fiction Break literary magazine to publish every single story entered in this contest. If you want to write a short story and get published, now’s your chance!
(Don’t worry, if you don’t want your story to be published, you’ll have a chance to opt out.)
You Get to Choose: Short Story or Narrative Nonfiction?
We love short stories. We also love narrative nonfiction, a genre of writing that hasn't had a chance to shine in our past contests.
That's why this time, we're doing something new: this contest is open to both short stories and narrative nonfiction pieces.
Fiction or nonfiction, all submissions must be based on the contest theme. For this contest, that theme is:
Two Worlds. Ordinary vs. Extraordinary. Normal vs. Adventurous. Real vs. Fantastical. Rich vs. Poor. Write a story in which two worlds come together in exciting (and maybe uncomfortable) ways.
Will your submission be a fictional tale or a nonfiction narrative? You tell us! Just select which genre you'll be writing when you sign up. Then, let those creative juices flow.

Hi Kikku. Yes, you’re more than welcome to join!
I am not 18 can I join
Yes, with a parent or guardians consent! 🙂
I’m scared. I took 1 online course in creative nonfiction about 2 years ago. But other than that really haven’t written again. But I want to write. I have a lot to say.
Fear is often a compass pointing us to what we most need to do next to grow as a person. It sounds like this is the perfect opportunity for you to take the next step in your writing.
I have signed up as of last night with the option to receive the judges feedback. I am very excited for this contest. I cannot wait to start writing my story. I am very eager to be a published author even if it is just for a short story. Hopefully I won’t overthink this project.
I am almost done but how do I send it to be workshopped?
